how I can support you

As a Naturopath and from personal experience, I have realised that there isn’t just one way to treat dis-ease within the body that works for everyone. We are all unique and require a program tailored to our individual needs. The following is what Internal Spark Wellness can offer you to support you on your journey to self-love and wellness.

Naturopathy

I feel strongly that long term permanent healing of the physical body requires attention on all aspects of ourselves, emotionally, mentally and spiritually in order for lasting healing to occur. Often these aspects are starved of love and acceptance and that’s a big key part of healing the body. Caring for ourselves is an important step in taking responsibility for one’s current state health and then in the restoration of health.

What is Naturopathy?

According to Australian Natural Therapists Association Limited (ANTA)

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to wellness based on the principle that the body has the inherent ability to heal itself. Using the healing power of nature and gentle therapeutic techniques, the body, mind and emotions are supported during the healing process.

 

Naturopathic principles are based on treating each person as an individual and treating the whole person, not just the affected area.

 

Naturopathy encompasses a variety of treatment methods including:

  • Herbal Medicine to help prevent and treat various illnesses
  • Dietary and Nutritional advice for restoration of balance, detoxification and prevention of disease
  • Lifestyle advice to promote well-being and to reduce stress
  • Hydrotherapy using the healing power of water to stimulate the immune system and the body’s natural defenses
  • The use of compresses and packs to stimulate organ function and to reduce pain

 

Some Naturopaths are also trained in the following:

  • Flower essences to enhance the emotional aspect of healing
  • Soft tissue manipulation to rebalance the body’s systems, to reduce pain and to enable detoxification
  • Homoeopathy

 

Naturopathy can alleviate a wide range of conditions and is suitable for all ages.  Some of the more common conditions treated include fatigue, stress related ailments, digestive problems, PMT and general aches and pains.  However, you do not need to be unwell to benefit from naturopathy.

 

Naturopathic treatments boost the body’s natural healing potential, restoring harmony and preventing disease.

Initial Naturopathic Consultation 1 - 1.25hours

Before arriving for your first consultation you would have filled already out a detailed questionnaire of your current state of health, physically, emotionally and also including your family history. In this form you will also outline your health goals, current diet and lifestyle choices including exercise and work status.

 

In this initial consultation I may check your zinc levels and request further specific tests if required such as blood, hair mineral analysis, food intolerance, allergies or hormones.

 

Upon leaving this consultation you may be required to keep a food diary till your next appointment.

 

Aim

Our aim is to gather as much information as possible from what you present with so as I can configure the best protocol so I can guide and support you towards your health goals.

 

Within the initial week to follow, you will receive an email containing information and instructions on how you wish to follow on with the treatment options I have offered and tailored to your specific needs. At the end of the day it is up to you to commit. This information will contain dietary adjustments, herbal or nutritional support and lifestyle adjustments.

 

If I require further information it will also be included in this email.

Follow-Up Naturopathic Consultation: 30 - 45minutes

Depending on your health issues that we are addressing this could be booked anywhere from 1-3 weeks post initial consultation. I understand everyone is at different stages and baby steps are required for some. I am willing to walk alongside you whilst you are committed to improving your health for as long as it takes to reach your goals.

 

During this in between consultation time you would have been following the diet and lifestyle changes and would have noted any changes in your experience. This gives us a good idea of what is working and what might need tweaking and the next step we take.

Working Together

As your Naturopath I am not offering a magical quick fix to your poor health situation. Some changes can be felt quickly and when the body is given the chance to it will heal Itself and this can take time, it is just a matter of you making the lifestyle changes required for it to do just that. This has no time frame as we all present with our own unique set of genes and conditionings. At the end of the day it is up to the client (You) to decide how much you want to reach your health goals and how sooner you reach them. I’m well aware of the many sabotage patterns we may carry and play out that will present to stop us from following through with the changes required. As your Naturopath I can also support you through these times and provide some insights into how you can recognise and reprogram these patterns so that you are not the one stopping you from reaching your health goals.

 

And as your Naturopath I wont just be treating your presenting symptoms. I will be looking at the big picture trying to find the root cause of your symptoms. In order for our physical body to start presenting with symptoms there has already been imbalances occurring for some time prior to this. For example, an area of concern is the mouth. Our state of health in the mouth reflects a lot about the state of the gastrointestinal tract and can be the root cause of many diseases including autoimmune conditions, cardiovascular disease and inflammation

 

I may prescribe Nutrients and Herbs for you to take to assist treatment of presenting issues. These are not included in the consultation exchange prices. Nothing will be prescribed that is not required in your protocol.

I have been seeing Debbie in her professional capacity for four years. She is a fully qualified Natropath. In that time, Debbie has shown a great deal of compassion and a non-judgemental approach as well as integrity.

The core difference with our detox programs is that at the same time as we address and support the physical body and its needs to detox and cleanse, we also emphasize on the importance of self love and care throughout your detox time in order to create lasting changes within you so as after your detox program is complete here with us you take with you the changes you made throughout this time and incorporate them into your day to day living—Very different from any other Fad detox program/Diet whereby (if- Yes IF) you complete it you just go back to living how you were prior to the detox which does not create any real change. Why Detox?

The purpose of detoxification is to reduce the toxic load that most of us carry around every day, due to being exposed to pollutants, chemicals, toxins, foodless food which includes artificial flavours, colours, additives, sugars, artificial sweeteners and for some alcohol, drugs and tobacco. This is best done with modifications in our Diet and lifestyle by changing the way we eat, what we drink, what we put on our skin, the way we think, medications we take and making sure our body’s detox capacity to process and eliminate these toxins are working effectively.

 

The body is made up of trillions of cells which are made of tubes. Plaque is what clogs up these tubes leading to disease. It could be called Cell plaque, dental plaque, artery plaque, liver plaque and so on. The causes of this plaque include Cell waste, lifeless drinks, foodless foods, drugs etc. Detoxing the body clears out these channels of elimination and unclogs these Tubes. Simple right?

Before we go too hard into cellular detoxification it’s so important to have the body clearing out waste first before we start releasing toxins from the cells and fat in which they are stored. What is the worst thing that could happen if you changed your diet and lifestyle? It’s a great question isn’t it. If we are being honest there’s nothing bad that could or would happen.

Imagine how life would be different if we could care for ourselves enough to make lasting changes that affect us only for the better? Just imagine that for a minute … or 5.

 

Now it doesn’t just stop or start with us, how we treat ourselves is the example we set for our children. Now think about how we would like our kids to think and feel about themselves. Would we want for them how we feel about ourselves? You see, the thing is kids learn by example and so in changing ourselves we can give them a more loving option to learn how to treat themselves as they grow.

 

Our self-esteem plays a massive role in the food, drink and thought choices we make daily. When we feel down we go for certain types of food and drink that are high is sugars, carbohydrates and alcohol. It can become a vicious cycle once we are in it (trust me).

 

Because this food makes us feel yuck, but it tastes good doesn’t it, and then our mood drops and we get a foggy brain and the kilograms begin to pile on, which makes our mood low and sometimes even depressed, and when we are depressed guess what foods we go for? The sugary kind.

 

Now, if we were to change the food choices we make, our body will begin to feel lighter, we may not like the taste at first because we were so used to the sweet poison we were having before, but after some weeks our mind feels clearer, we drop a few Kg’s and our sleep improves. We then begin to feel much happier and less depressed.

 

So how we see ourselves is changing at the same time we change our food choices. We notice more energy and we are happier to be around our friends and family. We begin to like the person we see in the mirror. Whether we were aware of it or not I’m sure we can all relate to having this kind of experience at some stage in our lives-if not currently right now.

It may mean you start slow and with low temperature to allow the body to adjust and have more of a gentle gradual affect if you have chronic health conditions and It might mean you could do with some Naturopathic consulting sessions with myself prior to beginning your detox journey in the sauna to prepare and ensure your body’s able to cope with the elimination of toxins once they are dislodged so as to not overburden the body.

How to Prepare for Your Sauna Session?

3 days BEFORE your sauna SESSION

  • Bowel motion at least 1x daily (more preferred)
  • Magnesium daily is good for everyone. (Citrate or a blend. Not Oxide)
  • Hydration is essential
  • Quality Multivitamin and mineral daily providing nutrients to support detoxification system
  • Support your detoxification system for at least 3 days prior taking Liposomal Glutathione
  • Limit strenuous exercise as the saunas use a lot of energy so with strenuous exercise it can be depleting
  • Good quality oils are essential (all the time). Olive oil, fish oil, fatty fish, evening primrose oil, flaxseed oil, hempseed oil, put in smoothies or on food. Healthy fats are needed to protect the cell membranes and brain during saunas. Phosphatidylcholine is also essential.

DAY OF YOUR SAUNA SESSION

  • Electrolytes in water first thing in the morning, Ribose, Creatine
  • Urine must be clear Dehydration NOT an option
  • Consume balanced meals- Have a healthy breakfast with protein, fat and some carbs. A protein smoothie is great – with some veggies and/or fruits, seeds and healthy oils
  • Zero Caffeine-Try to skip your caffeine. If you’re tired, then consider using NADH + CoQ10 and an Adrenal Cortex supplement. Both of these will truly help you in the mornings more than your coffee ever will
  • Zero exercise
  • Liposomal Vitamin C and Glutathione in the morning

RIGHT BEFORE YOUR SAUNA SESSION

  • No food 30 minutes before sauna. 80% satiety
  • Can have balanced light snack prior if having a morning sauna
  • Pee and Poo prior
  • Weigh yourself. Write it down. You need to weigh the same amount after you are finished with your sauna. If you don’t weigh the same, you are dehydrated. You need to drink enough water with electrolytes to get back to your pre-sauna weight
  • Keep a mental note of how you feel before and after sauna * Journaling these if you come often can be very helpful when monitoring for improvements headaches, energy levels increasing or decreasing, joint pain before or after, brain fog, tired, rashes, body odour from sweating?
  • Cotton Clothing or Sarongs provided. Important to dress comfortably
  • Consider a sauna hat. This keeps the heat off of your head.
  • Filtered water provided Glass only no plastic even BPA free or stainless steel
  • Can recommend Niacin low dose for flushing the skin which helps sweat vasodilation and helps mobilize stored fats. *It will increase heart rate. Cold towel will help, open door or hop out. Supervised only.

GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR SAUNA SESSION?

CAUTIONS DURING SAUNA

It’s not a competition if you feel unwell get out. This is a sign we need to work on the body a bit before beginning the saunas.

 

Starting Low heat and for low duration is ok. See how you feel. There are many factors that can be contributing to low tolerance but we can correct these beforehand or alongside depending on severity

 

  • Don’t sleep in the sauna
  • Kids get hot faster than adults
  • NO alcohol (it also dehydrates the body)
  • Drink room temperature water, not cold

COMMON ISSUES

  • Can’t sweat? This can mean you are dehydrated, or your adrenal glands are shot and that your toxicity level is high. You need to start sweating whatever way you can. Wear warm clothes whilst exercising, jog, treadmill, rebound trampoline, whatever it takes. If you still don’t sweat, then your autonomic nervous system is not working right – due to this toxicity and/or chemical burden.

SOLUTIONS

  • Hydrate with electrolytes
  • Support adrenal function with our Naturopath
  • Stay committed, slow progression is still progression

Do you sweat when you exercise or its hot outside?

 

The more you sauna the more you will sweat because the more you will clear out this build-up of Toxins in your cells.

AFTER SAUNA CARE

  • Leave door open
  • Weigh yourself. Write it down. You need to weigh the same amount after you are finished with your sauna. If you don’t weigh the same, you are dehydrated. You need to drink enough water with electrolytes to get back to your pre-sauna weight
  • Hydrate with electrolytes
  • Shower with soap
  • Brush teeth and scrape tongue *Important. You can find tongue scrapers at health food stores
  • Avoid drafts, stay warm
  • Make notes on how you feel
  • No exercise or strenuous activity, take it easy and relax listening to music or go to sleep, read books, watch movies
  • Eat a light snack. No dried foods. No cold foods. Soups, broths, steamed veggies are great. Don’t burden your liver with a high protein, high fat meal right now
  • You likely will continue sweating. If you do, change your clothes before you go to sleep – and ideally take a rinse in the shower before bed

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SAUNA?

It depends. Ideally, I want to sauna once a week. There are times when one has to sauna more – and times when one has to sauna less.

The key is to sauna when you feel somewhat strong. If you need to sauna and you are not feeling strong, do a low heat and short duration sauna.

 

The nutrients mentioned in these check lists are done so to ensure that the body is provided with what it needs to safely and most effectively function so as you get the most out of using the sauna as a detox method. As your care practitioner I only want what is best for you and what is not going to cause any harm to you.

 

It is just advice I have gathered from research and you do not have to follow these suggestions but if you wish to do what is best for your internal environment whilst enjoying simply relaxing whilst your body releases toxins due to a good ol’ sweat than you may wish do so.

Benefits of Far Infrared Sauna Sessions

I have been having semi regular Far Infrared Sauna sessions at Internal Spark Wellness for a number of months.
